Testing and demonstration

The testing and demonstration activities performed in MARINER rely on three laboratory facilities with complementary capabilities.

Activities cover short-stack pre-tests, submodule Accelerated Stress Test (AST), and the testing of 1 MW fuel cell system in realistic conditions. They enable a systematic assessment of system reliability, efficiency, durability, and degradation rates.

Test

Short-stack test bench at Centre PERSEE/Mines

This laboratory from ARMINES MINES, based in Sophia Antipolis, France, will perform short-stack tests of ~2 kW for 880 hours. They aim to:

  • Characterize the performance of the chosen stack technology
  • Determine its point of maximal system efficiency
  • Quantify degradation rates for different operating conditions and for start/stop cycles.
  • Calibrate numerical models used to support further developments.

Partners MINES, GENEVOS and CEA will contribute to these tests.

Marine high-power energy systems test facilities

The SEANERGY facility from CEA, based in Bouguenais, France, will perform accelerated stress (AST) tests of 200 kW modules for over 1000 hours. They aim to:
  • Develop an AST methodology at system level
  • Apply this method to evaluate the fuel cell system’s reliability and durability
  • Deliver the data enabling to build precise ageing models
Partners CEA, GENEVOS, MINES and LR EMEA will contribute to these activities.

Test

Full scale “ship on land” marine testing facility

The Energy House test center at Sustainable Energy in Stord, Norway, will enable testing the 1MW fuel cell system in a simulated marine environment over 1.000 hours. These tests will validate the system’s performance, including:
  • Real ship load profiles provided by end user partners
  • The Energy Management System (EMS) and power split between the individual fuel cell modules and battery system
  • System response during normal operation and failure modes.
